AAUW and Civil Rights Groups Oppose OCR Nominee, Vote Postponed

After careful examination of Kenneth Marcus’ record, AAUW urged senators to oppose his nomination to be Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education, citing failure to agree to fully support and protect Title IX and other civil rights laws. AAUW also cited Marcus’ failure to adequately respond to key questions including his refusal to commit to supporting the 2011 or 2014 guidance regarding sexual harassment and violence during his hearing in front of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. The Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights plays a critical role in ensuring all students have access to an education, and a number of civil rights groups oppose Marcus’ confirmation to the role. The Senate HELP Committee was expected to vote on Thursday to move forward with Marcus’s nomination, but the vote was rescheduled.
